It was the direct involvement of major motor manufacturers, realising that showroom sales were directly influenced by success on the tracks, which fuelled the intensity of the saloon car battles that raged in the early-mid ‘70s. So it became almost mandatory that the three-way battles, which dominated the ETCC, were staged by Alfa Romeo, Ford and BMW.
These inspiring marques were quickly joined by rival makes establishing one of the most spectacular series for tin-tops in an era that has since been hard to emulate in terms of accessibility and sheer excitement. Top Hat created the Thorogood GTA Challenge some three years ago to accommodate the evocative Alfa Romeos from this period.
Since then, owners of other marques have lobbied to join the series to such an extent that Top Hat ran some invitation classes in 2004 for the likes of Ford Capris, BMW 2002s, Triumph Dolomites and NSU TTs. The effect produced some evocative racing, so much so that the doors of the Thorogood GTA Challenge have now been officially opened to all marques and models that raced in the ‘70s. With that, it has been decided to rename the series to ‘Groovy Baby!’ in the spirit of that colourful era. (Austin Powers-styled liveries and clothing are vigorously encouraged!).
