Chassis: 412016
This short-chassis 8C 2900B Touring Spider was sold new to Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. A true enthusiast, the Prince used the light grey over blue Alfa Romeo regularly before he had to flee the country from the invading Germans. Chassis 412016 was confiscated by the Germans and used in the army's motor pool until the engine seized in 1941. The car was sold to a Dutch dealer, who managed to safely store the 8C 2900B for the remainder of War. In 1945 the Prince returned to the country and must have been pleasantly surprised to find his Alfa Romeo had survived. He painted a Canadian flag on the left front fender to honour Holland's liberators.
A year later the car was sold to a Belgian enthusiast who raced the car to second at Chimay, beaten only by an ERA. Repainted red, chassis 412016 is believed to have raced in the Spa 24 Hours in 1948 but it does not appear in the results. Through a London dealer, the car was eventually sold to American Jim Ibold in 1952. He carefully preserved the car and owned it for more than five decades. Ibold only sold the car because his deteriorating eyesight prevented him from driving his beloved 8C 2900B. In 2004 it was acquired by an American historic racer and shortly was sold on to a noted British Alfa Romeo collector. He had the car carefully prepared by marque expert Neil Twyman. Still in remarkably original condition and painted in its 1945 colours. During the Festival of Speed it was one of the stars of the Concours d'Elegance. (Source: The Immortal 2.9, by Simon Moore)
